As the holidays ramp up, we’re sharing news of the history of ‘Love Actually,’ Lars von Trier’s knack for getting what he wants, and more in our roundup.
It’s so important to understand the history behind holiday traditions. Today’s lesson comes viaThe Guardian, which presents this oral history of the making of “Love Actually.” Whether you love or hate the film, it’s certainly entertaining to hear about Bill Nighy summoning the courage to perform the role of an aging rock star when he can’t actually sing a lick.
No idea how Lars Von Trier wrested back control over the final cut of his graphic sex opus “Nymphomaniac” (possibly more deserving of the title “Love Actually”), but the Berlin Film Festival will be showing the original five-hour cut, all as one film. For a man who rarely leaves his Denmark and continually causes uproar in the film world, he sure has a funny knack for getting his way.
“Moby Dick is the hero of Moby-Dick.” The blog LOL My Thesis prides itself on the ability to reduce years of work to one painfully simple sentence. I’m also a big fan of: “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Show No Imagination by Writing My Thesis on Kubrick.”
On a somber note, YA novelist Ned Vizzini (It’s Kind of a Funny Story) died late last week at the terribly young age of thirty-two. Vizzini had documented his struggle with suicidal depression in his writing, but we always like to imagine our authors victorious, as if the act of publishing a book on a subject fixes all of their problems. His contribution to the lives of young readers will be remembered, and his evolving voice as a storyteller will be missed.
